1985.

Inception

Founded in Harare, Zimbabwe

Varichem Pharmaceuticals is established with a mission to provide locally manufactured, high-quality medicines to support Zimbabwe's growing healthcare needs.

1990s.

Growth

Product Expansion & Facility Growth

The company expands its portfolio to include a wide range of generic medicines, topical creams, and oral liquids, becoming a reliable supplier to local hospitals and pharmacies.

2004.

ARVs Launch

Launch of Locally Made ARVs

Varichem becomes the first local pharmaceutical company in Zimbabwe to produce antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). It launches Stalanev, the country's first triple-combination ARV — a major breakthrough in HIV/AIDS treatment accessibility.

2010.

WHO Prequalification

WHO Prequalification Achieved

Varichem earns World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification for its ARVs — specifically Stalanev 30 and Varivar — making it the first indigenous pharmaceutical company in Southern Africa to meet global quality standards. This enables participation in international donor-funded programs.

2011 – 2015.

Regional Market

Regional Market Entry

The company begins exporting to neighboring countries including Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, and Mozambique, expanding its footprint in Southern Africa and supporting regional healthcare systems.

2016 – 2020.

Compliance

Infrastructure & Compliance Upgrades

Varichem invests in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and upgrades its Quality Control Laboratory to align with evolving GMP, ISO, and regulatory standards, reinforcing its reputation for excellence.

2020 – 2024.

Resilience

Resilience During COVID-19

Despite global supply chain disruptions, Varichem maintains uninterrupted medicine production, supporting national health resilience and continuing to serve public sector and donor-funded procurement systems.

2025.

40th Anniversary

Celebrating 40 Years of Impact

Today, Varichem offers 178+ registered medicines, operates a GMP-certified facility, and is recognized as one of Zimbabwe's most trusted pharmaceutical manufacturers — with a legacy of innovation, integrity, and regional impact.
